Dealing With Exam Stress

Exam stress dealing, study hacks in lock-down
Study Stress

According to historical sources, an American businessman and Philanthropist known as Henry Fischel invented the concept of EXAMS, and our lives have never been the same again.

Originally, examinations were conducted to test the knowledge of a person, but now they are conducted to test the mugging capacity of a person.

They were supposed to be a learning experience and a way to improve your knowledge of a subject, but they ended up being a piece of paper that decided if we should exist in the society or not. Whoever said “A sheet of paper, can’t decide my future” was definitely wrong, because nowadays a single sheet of paper not only decides your future but your worth as well, and this single sheet of paper has the power to crush your self-esteem and self-confidence.

Exams are like those relatives who we want to avoid but can’t because they are part of our family too, so we have to meet them occasionally, prepare ourselves for their brutal and difficult questions, and then after returning back home we constantly think about the answers we gave, often asking ourselves if the answers were correct and appropriate.

Now, with examinations comes a lot of pressure, stress, anxiety, self-doubt, and distractions, which act as a barrier to our method of studying. So here are some hacks that you can use to enhance your way of studying.

1. Try walking:- Pop-in your earphones, play your favorite songs, and then start walking for at least fifteen minutes. Try walking in fresh air, but if you are unable to go out then walk around in your room.

Walking cuts stress hormones and releases endorphins, some experts also believe that daily walk can reduce the symptoms of seasonal affective disorder (SAD), and well, music is to distract your mind from all the stressful thoughts.

2. Meditation:- Now, I know there are million sites telling us to meditate, but what they aren’t telling us is the way we should practice meditation; usually meditation is supposed to be in a sitting position with straight back and eyes closed for at least 20 minutes, but unfortunately for us we fail at this every single time, so here’s another way you can meditate in:-

Step 1-: Lay down on your back with your eyes closed, and start taking deep breaths (inhale from nose and exhale from mouth).

Step 2 :-  Now start acknowledging every single thought that you have on your mind, take your time with this process. Once you have acknowledged every thought, lock these thoughts up in one corner of your brain.

Step 3 :- After this, start thinking about your feet, visualize them. You’ll feel sensation or warmth in your feet. Then follow the same procedure for your calves, thighs, lower abdomen, stomach, chest, palms, arms, neck, face, and head.

Once you start feeling warmth in your palms move these palms and place them on your beating heart. The warmth from your palms will have a calming effect on your restless heart, take three or four deep breaths during this process.

* Step 4 :- Now this may look like a time-consuming process, but it isn’t, it takes 10 minutes at max to complete this meditation.

3. Set short goals:- If you are not someone who likes to study regularly, then do not ever start studying thinking you’ll finish reading the whole book in a day, the only thing you’ll end up finishing is the sanity of your mind, so at the beginning start studying one or two paragraphs and then slowly and steadily expand your range and time limit of studying. These short goals help you prepare better and faster.

4. Set a timetable:- Try setting a timetable which has proper breaks in it. Most of us set a timetable where we devote our every breathing second to studies, and that is why we end up not following that timetable.

A proper timetable is the one where time is equally distributed between studies, sleep, and other activities. When you have a timetable which not only helps you study but also give your mind and body ample amount of time to relax things become doable.

5. Different methods of studying:- Try to invent new fun ways to learn something, you can either make flash cards, draw diagrams, and flow charts to remember things easily. You can also use colored pens to make your reading material interesting and easy on eyes.

6. Treat yourself:- After completing your short goal treat yourself with chocolates, ice cream or a break. It is important to celebrate little achievements to boost your confidence and self-esteem.

7. Understand the concept:- Try to understand what the textbook is saying, instead of just mugging it up. Once your concepts are clear you can easily write the answers in your own language.

In subjects like mathematics practice is the key, so practice equations, formulas, and sample questions after clearing your basics about the topic.

8. Last and the most important point:- Do not ever stay up all night before your exam, it’s a very bad idea. If you are not well rested while giving your examination there is at least 75% chance that you’ll lose your calm in the beginning hour of your exam, and eventually even the simple questions will look difficult and you’ll end up performing badly.

(Always remember exams are just a PART of our life, they are not our whole LIFE.)
